Surprising Uses For Coffee

You’ve known your Starbucks order since you were 15 (grande iced skinny vanilla latte please). But did you know you can also use coffee for seasoning your food and fertilizing your plants? Read on for more amazing uses for your favorite hot beverage, coffee.

  1. Eliminate Odors.
Your fish-and-chips dinner party was a hit… and now your home smells like the alley behind your favorite sushi spot the night before trash pick up! Spread a quarter cup of freshly ground coffee in a cast iron skillet on medium heat, as soon as it becomes aromatic (about one minute or so) remove from heat and allow to cool. Magically the odors should be gone! You can also make a discreet air freshener by placing coffee grounds in a cute sachet and storing them in your kitchen and in your fridge to absorb not-so-fresh odors all day long.
  2. Make Your Own Anti-Cellulite Cream.
The caffeine in coffee has been shown to do many amazing things, one of which is reducing the unsightly fatty pockets under the skin that we know as cellulite. Here’s what you do: mix coffee grounds with coconut oil (I keep mine in an adorable old tea can & leave in the bathroom). Come shower time rub in a circular motion for a few minutes and rinse. Bonus: the coconut oil leaves your skin feeling soft and moisturized & you’ll be exfolliated.
*This can get messy, I strongly recommend you use IN the shower.
  3. Clean Those Stubborn Dishes.
Coffee grounds are great for cleaning extra dirty or greasy dishes. Simply apply, scrub, rinse. Just make sure to avoid anything that may stain as coffee can leave behind a tint (read don’t use on fine china).
  4.  Hide Those Scratches On Your Hardwood.
When Elliott and I moved into our first apartment his father lent us these gorgeous expensive wooden end tables. Within a week our 6 month old puppy had managed to scratch the surface of them. The solution: dip a cotton swab in steeped grounds and dab on the surface. The deep color will fill in the scratches making them very much less noticeable.
  5. Repel Insects & Fertilize Plants.
Ants and Slugs don’t like the smell of coffee, therefore applying coffee grounds around plants and near your doorways will keep them away.  They’re perfect for a compost as they are rich in phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and copper, and release nitrogen into the soil as they degrade. They’re also a little bit acidic, which is great for certain soils
  6. Season Your Steak.
If you haven’t tried a Coffee Rubbed Steak yet, you’re seriously missing out! Coffee lends such a unique flavor to meat that is the perfect compliment to grilling. Try a coffee rub for your next meal.
  7. Natural Hair Gloss.
A weekly coffee hair rinse can leave your hair extra shiny and healthy looking. Brew up an extra strong batch of coffee and let cool completely, apply to hair and leave on for 10-20 minutes & rinse. Just be very careful if you have light hair, especially if you have highlights as this mixture can cause hair to look darker.

Now that you know, get to scrubbing, seasoning, and glossing.
